Bar Mitzvah Framed Keepsake 16x20/Platinum
Dylan’s invitation was printed in sapphire blue ink on white paper. This invitation was a folded square, which I cut in half. I layered the pieces of the invitation on sapphire metallic paper and used blue metal dots as corner accents. Using the range of colors in the invitation’s design for inspiration, I created the foundation using paper in a wide range of blues and burgundy, with accents of teal and purple. I used clear embossing to add texture to the plain teal cardstock at the bottom center of the design. A rich burgundy suede paper (upper left) and blue mesh add more texture to the design. The Stars of David at the bottom right were cut from an extra copy of the invitation. The Jerusalem skyline at the bottom left was torn from a place card. The Torah portion is represented in the upper right hand corner, layered on torn cardstock and translucent blue vellum. The navy mat and rich brown frame, along with the metal accents, add masculine elements and pull the design together.

Ethan’s invitation is printed in gold ink on white paper mounted on a navy bottom layer. I used the colors in the beautiful Torah design as my inspiration. The foundation layer is white textured cardstock with a narrow vertical stripe. This is topped by navy, metallic blue, and gold papers to complement the text and design colors. A strip of burgundy mulberry paper is layered just below the invitation, topped by burgundy ribbon. I used smaller versions of the Torah motif (from the reception card and thank-you note) on the right-hand side, silhouette cut and mounted on translucent gold vellum and burgundy cardstock with a rippled texture. Navy satin ribbon on another piece of metallic blue paper completes the design, with the cherry frame as an important element in keeping the design masculine and timeless.

Jonathan’s beautiful invitation was printed in silver ink on black paper, with a silver bottom layer and the Bar Mitzvah boy’s name embossed in black ink on a piece of translucent vellum. I layered the invitation on silver paper embossed with a mesh texture, black-on-black striped cardstock and translucent silver vellum, and accented the first layer with metal dots. The background includes black, silver, white, and translucent paper in a variety of textures. I used a stamp with script similar to the font used for the name to create the embossed silver-on-black paper at the top left and the black-on-vellum paper at the bottom right. Stars of David were cut from other paper I embossed, including black-on-black and silver-on-silver. Silver mesh, a silver mat, and the black frame are the finishing touches.

My daughter Zoe’s invitation is a simple design printed in deep orchid ink on white paper. Zoe asked me to use her favorite shade of green as well as purple for her InvitationCreation. I layered the invitation with deep purple textured floral paper and translucent purple vellum, anchoring the layers with jeweled green and purple floral brads. The background paper includes prints, stripes, and embossed prints and solids in shades of green and purple. The Star of David in the upper-left corner was part of my daughter’s thank-you note; it is mounted on translucent green vellum. Zoe’s Torah portion is represented in the bottom right corner, layered on purple vellum and accented by ribbon and purple mesh. I cut the floral petals in the upper right and bottom left from green paper that was embossed with clear ink to add texture. Buttons accent the design in several places, and are used with the jeweled floral brads to anchor the pearls.

Bethany’s large, bold and dramatic invitation was printed in azure ink on white paper mounted on a silver bottom layer. I wanted to keep the azure, silver, and white theme, bringing as many texture variations as possible to the design within the limits of the 12x12 size. The foundation layer of this InvitationCreation is a textured azure paper, enhanced with a strip of striped transparent vellum along the left-hand side. The geometrically embossed pieces of white paper at the upper right and lower left corners were cut from the invitation’s envelope lining. Along the right-hand side, I used clear embossing on a piece of azure vellum to add sparkle and texture; sheer silver ribbon tops that layer. The invitation itself is mounted on a textured white layer and a dark silver layer, with silver leaves sandwiched between the layers. A wonderful teal paper with a multicolor sparkle pulls it all together.

Rachel’s playful and spirited invitation is printed on white paper, with design elements that include silver and deeper purple. The lilac mat matches the invitation’s ink. The invitation itself is layered on translucent striped purple vellum, white textured paper, and mirrored silver paper to pick up the “shine” in the design. The background paper includes white and purple prints, purple floral embossed paper, silver swirls embossed on white, and translucent vellum printed with silver hearts (a heart shape was used on the invitation’s reception card). The torn edge on the purple paper in the lower left corner adds texture. Sheer purple and silver ribbons accent the right hand side. Silver leaves, silver mesh, and shiny silver cord add texture. Clear jewels anchor the strand of white pearls. I designed and cut the Stars of David in the lower right hand corner using the mirrored silver paper and purple cardstock.

Sarah’s lovely invitation was printed in a subtle blue-gray ink (Persian blue) on white paper. To add interest and dimension to this design, I decided to use silver as a third color. The foundation paper is a richly textured embossed paper with a Persian blue design on a silver background. A strip of translucent silver vellum is layered on top of the foundation; the vellum is edged with silver mesh at the top and bottom. A layer of leaf-embossed clear vellum is placed horizontally behind the invitation, topped with a Persian blue ribbon. The invitation is layered on sparkling sapphire blue paper and white rice paper. For the lower right corner, I printed a drawing of a Torah with the name of Sarah’s Torah portion on white paper, which was torn and layered with the sapphire blue and white rice papers. Silver leaves were used as accents.

This unframed sample shows what you can do with variations of one color plus a neutral. The design on Molly’s invitation was a Star of David composed of small flowers in a rich raspberry color. The invitation itself was printed on translucent vellum. I layered the invitation on white floral textured paper and raspberry mulberry paper. The background was pieced together from print paper in patterns and shades of pink and raspberry; in the upper left corner, there is a piece of the shiny raspberry invitation lining. Molly’s thank-you note is in the bottom left corner, with torn edges to add interest. I used star and flower punches to create the decorative elements in the upper left and bottom right, using raspberry and pink printed vellum, mulberry paper, and pieces of Molly’s invitation. A strand of white pearls is anchored by clear pink jewels, which also are used to accent the centers of the pink fabric flowers in the lower left. Small pink flowers with jeweled centers accent the invitation itself. Shiny raspberry cord adds another textural element in the upper right corner.

In this smaller version of my daughter’s invitation, I drew my inspiration from the orchid ink and the beautiful marble envelope lining, rich with shades of purple and gold. The linings from two envelopes were pieced together to create the first layer under the invitation; below that is a floral textured deep purple paper, followed by layers of gold paper and translucent purple vellum accented with purple mesh. The foundation layer is a lovely purple-on-purple print. A strip of purple floral embossed cardstock topped by sheer edged purple ribbon adds horizontal interest. Finally, purple skeleton leaves add texture and complete the design.

Jill’s unusual mint green and purple invitation presented a design challenge – how to balance the two colors without one dominating the other – so I decided to use the invitation’s accent color, mint green, for the mat. Textured purple, green, and translucent paper were layered behind the invitation. The background paper included striped, floral, and abstract prints in complementary shades of green and purple. The invitation lining was used, as well as the patterned lining from the “save the date” card. Green and purple ribbons were tied together to echo the ribbons on the invitation. Sheer purple ribbon flowers with pearl centers were used to anchor the strand of pearls, as along with the glittery skeleton leaves that overlap onto the mat.

For this keepsake, the client requested that I add blue and green to the color scheme. The invitation is mounted on a cream-printed translucent vellum, a blue/green and cream floral print paper, and a subtle green and cream printed paper. The background includes green floral and bamboo printed papers, an antique turquoise and cream print, blue watered vellum on cream, cream parchment, green vellum layered on blue vellum, and a dark blue and green antique print, in addition to cream and blue solid cardstock. Accents include pearls, buttons, green and blue ribbons, and skeleton leaves. Daisy embellishments on the mat and the collage tie this design together.

My husband and I got married on two weeks’ notice – we had a small, intimate ceremony and celebrated with a small group of family and friends. Six months later we threw a big party for all of our friends who couldn’t be included in our wedding. So the photo is from our small December wedding; the invitation is from our reception held the following June. The invitation is mounted with bronze brads onto on burgundy suede paper, antique white moiré silk paper, and glossy pebbled burgundy paper. The photograph is on cream-printed translucent vellum and textured cream cardstock. Dusty antique rose printed paper is the final layer under the photograph and also is included in the background. Other background papers include white roses, embossed tan brocade, pearlescent printed brocade, two antique tan patterned papers, wedding words foil paper, and burgundy and gold leaf printed paper. Antique white skeleton leaves, pearls, burgundy ribbon, and white silk flowers accent the collage. An antique gold and silver teardrop frame completes the romantic mood of this keepsake.

The size and shape of this large rectangular invitation led me to use a “portrait” orientation. This elegant invitation is printed in black ink on “debossed” cardstock – it has a dropped lower panel, giving it a very modern yet traditional look I layered the invitation on cream floral translucent vellum, black-on-black striped cardstock, and cream moiré paper. The foundation layer was pieced together using black floral embossed cardstock, cream rose print paper, cream parchment printed paper, taupe-on-cream floral paper, and foil-embossed cream paper with wedding words. The sage, taupe and gold embossed paper adds an unexpected touch of color that enhances the elegant theme. The paper in the lower right-hand corner is cream paper with tiny clear beads attached to it, adding shine and texture to the design. A strand of cream-colored pearls also adds texture, along with small black silk flowers and cream silk flowers with pearl centers. The mat is accented with sheer black ribbon and a large silk flower that I assembled.

This keepsake collage illustrates how paper itself can be used as a design element. This invitation is printed in black ink on paneled cream cardstock. I layered the invitation on black-on-black striped cardstock, which also was used as accents in the upper right and lower left corners. The foundation layer is a creamy print of white roses, softened by a piece of translucent vellum. A piece of satiny cream moiré paper is layered just below the invitation, next to a piece of elegant foil-embossed cream paper whose wedding-themed words are used as a design element. Sheer black ribbon accents the right-hand side of the design. A thicker black ribbon with a textured horizontal stripe overlaps the moiré paper. Cream skeleton leaves add an additional element of texture.

Birth Announcement Framed Keepsake 12x16/Gold

For my daughter Zoe’s birth announcement, I designed a background to bring out the bright colors and complement the graphics included in the original design. The announcement itself is layered on metallic purple paper, multi-colored circle patterned paper, white oxford vellum, and tangerine vellum mounted on white cardstock. The background includes mango metallic paper; green textured paper; three different purple floral papers, two with glitter accents; and a tone-on-tone raspberry print to complement the raspberry ink. The announcement and its layers are anchored on a textured Aegean blue paper accented by raspberry snaps

It’s a girl, but this turquoise announcement could be used for a boy or a girl; my challenge was to turn this lovely gender-neutral announcement into a sophisticated but feminine design by using subtle patterns and a hint of pink. The announcement is mounted on turquoise tone-on-tone striped paper, followed by a patterned paper incorporating turquoise, dusty pink, cream, and chartreuse. A textured turquoise paper forms the next layer. A swirled translucent vellum paper is anchored by white silk flowers. Underneath, a pink tone-on-tone block print adds vertical interest to the turquoise tone-on-tone print background paper. A strip of subtle pink patterned paper is topped by pale pink ribbon. Silver skeleton leaves pick up the silver rattle in the announcement.

This very sophisticated announcement has strong circular design elements and an unusual mix of color. Under the announcement is a layer of pink translucent vellum, followed by white circular embossed paper and a circle-patterned paper in brown, green, and two shades of pink. A striped paper in the same mix of colors plus white anchors the design vertically. An oxford translucent white vellum, which softens the design is anchored by two pink brads and a square of white mesh to the subtle pink background paper. White mesh also accents the horizontal green stripe of textured paper. In the lower right corner, the large pink flower with a green brad center makes a strong statement, echoing the wide-open mouth in the announcement.

This invitation to a retirement ceremony required careful attention to the subtle and unusual colors used in the floral design. The invitation, which is printed in black ink on white paper with a thin gold border, is layered with pink mulberry paper, textured gold paper, and green paper that exactly matches the color of the leaves. The foundation is composed of two prints that blend the dusty pinks and greens of the invitation’s flower. A thin strip of translucent floral cream vellum, topped off by ribbon and skeleton leaves, adds balance and texture to the design. The cherry frame adds warmth and sophistication.

When I had my adult bat mitzvah in 2002, I wanted to include my close friends and family in the celebration. I printed the inside portion of these invitations at home; the inside piece slips into slots behind the scrolls onto the outer portion of the invitation. The entire invitation is mounted on an artic gold metallic paper with navy blue faux eyelets in the four corners. This layer is accented by a strip of navy ripple textured paper behind the center of the invitation. A strip of translucent gold vellum paper is mounted vertically behind the arctic gold paper; horizontally, there is a strip of cream and gold swirl print paper. The background paper is cream with a dotted gold floral design. A mesh textured navy metallic paper is set directly on top of the background layer, adhered on the diagonal. Sheer gold ribbon and skeleton leaves add texture to the design. The gold textured frame is the finishing touch.

In September 2007, the Jewish Home and Aging Services of metropolitan Detroit celebrated its 100th anniversary with a gala honoring its Executive Director. I donated this keepsake collage in honor of the wonderful work done by this organization. The large event invitation itself had eight panels, two of which included the names of donor and community leaders participating in the event. I used the other six panels individually to build this 18”x24” collage. I wanted to keep the focus on the invitation pieces, so the background for the whole piece is a white paper with a dotted silver swirl pattern. The focal point invitation panel (top center) is mounted on silver stardust paper, silver mesh paper, silver leaf-printed translucent vellum, grape cardstock, and then a final layer of the silver leaf vellum. The lower center panel is mounted on the silver leaf velum, white metallic mesh paper, and grape cardstock. Square silver brads accent the corners of the two center panels. All of the other invitation panels are mounted on the silver leaf-printed translucent vellum and grape cardstock. Pulling the panels together are silver and purple embossed paper mounted on the diagonal.
